Discovering Fishing Magic at Lake Arthur
As the waterfowl hunting season wanes each winter, many anglers like Trevor Huval turn their attention to the rich fishing opportunities at Lake Arthur in Southwest Louisiana. With the temperatures dropping and fish on the move, February is the perfect time to explore this fishing paradise.
The Secret Behind Huval's Success
At just 21, fisherman Trevor Huval has accumulated a wealth of experience fishing Lake Arthur and the Mermentau River. His bait of choice is a hair jig that he swears by for catching sak-a-lait, a local favorite that many anglers can’t resist. “This particular model is a black/chartreuse and I typically fish it about a foot below a cork, plus I drop it alongside the roots of cypress knees,” Huval shares. Alongside this, he uses a monkey milk-colored soft plastic known as the Bobby Garland Baby Shad, which has become a staple in his fishing arsenal.
Timing Is Everything
Huval notes that February is particularly fruitful since sac-a-lait tend to move into shallower waters during their spawning season. They are usually found in depths of 2-5 feet. “Once the water hits about 65-68 degrees, the action picks up,” he explains, detailing how he can often catch 25 fish in just ten minutes when they are biting consistently.
Keeping an Eye on Water Conditions
While Huval prefers clear water for fishing, he acknowledges that Lake Arthur can be muddy. However, this doesn’t deter his success. “I’ve landed some impressive catches even in murky conditions. Last year, my biggest sac-a-lait weighed in at 2 pounds, 8 ounces,” he reflects. The muddy water is often disregarded by other anglers, creating a prime opportunity for those willing to brave the conditions.
Preferred Techniques for Local Species
Huval’s fishing journey on Lake Arthur extends to targeting bass as well, particularly using Texas-rigged black/blue Senkos. Local fishing experts note that the lake has recently been stocked with Florida bass, making it an exciting spot for bass fishing enthusiasts. Whether slinging lures in clearer waters or navigating muddy patches, the diversity of fishing techniques employed showcases the excitement of fishing in Louisiana.
