New Reservation System for January Deer Hunt on Long Island
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced a significant update for deer hunters in Suffolk County. Starting January 4, 2026, a new online reservation system will streamline how hunters secure spots for the upcoming deer hunting season. Instead of visiting a check station in person, hunters can make reservations through the Reserve America system, which is already popular for camping reservations in state parks.
How the New System Works
In this new system, hunters will need to create a free account with Reserve America, separate from any existing camping accounts. Initial reservation slots open from December 15 at 9 a.m. to December 19 at 5 p.m., allowing hunters to book a single hunting session on a preferred location. Additional reservations will be accessible starting December 28, where hunters can secure spots for remaining available dates up to a week in advance.

This streamlined online process replaces the previous in-person reservation method at the Ridge Hunter Check Station, making it more convenient during the busy hunting season. Hunters still need to check in at their designated check stations on the day of the hunt except for areas like Noyac and Barcelona Neck, where permits will be emailed.
